Along with the rest of the nation, Nagaland Police observed Police Commemoration Day on Friday.
The occasion was marked by holding a ceremonial parade at New Police Reserve, Phesama near Kohima to pay tributes to police personnel who had laid down their lives in the line of duty during the year. Director General of Police (DGP) T John Longkumer and several senior police officers laid wreath and paid respects to 264 policemen and women who had sacrificed their lives across India while maintaining internal security.
Addressing the gathering, the DGP reminded the police personnel the crucial role they played in the development of a thriving democratic nation like India. Paying tribute to the personnel who had lost their lives while maintaining law and order, he also recalled the courage and sacrifice of lance naik Y Vihekhu Sema of 8th NAP, who was killed while performing duty in New Delhi.
He said Police Commemoration Day was observed not only to mourn the death of brave policemen and women, but also to take pride in their sacrifices and the ideals they stood for. Longkumer remarked that it was also a day to renew the pledge to serve the people and to secure and maintain law and order. A parade led by ABI Paul Chawang of Kohima DEF was also held at the venue.
Laying of wreaths was led by DGP followed by other officials.
Dimapur: Dimapur police also observed Police Commemoration Day at Police Commissionerate premises. Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner of Police (CP) Rothihu Tetseo mentioned about the importance of the day, stating that the day commemorated the sacrifices of 10 policemen who sacrificed their lives while defending the borders against China in 1959.
He appealed to personnel of Nagaland Police who wanted to visit Hot Springs, Ladakh to pay homage to the martyred policemen to come forward, adding that the department would take care of the expenditure.
He said from October 21, 2021 till Friday, altogether 264 police personnel lost their lives across the country, which was a drop from 377 in the previous year. The CP mentioned that the dead also included lance naik Y Vihekhu Sema from Nagaland. He disclosed that names of policemen or women dying of illness or other some other reasons while not being in duty were also included in the list of the dead, adding that the number of such deaths stood at 22.
According to him, with 37 deaths, Jammu & Kashmir topped the list this year, overtaking Chhattisgarh (32). During the period, there were also six States that did not register any death of cops. These States were Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Punjab, and Telangana, he added.
