With the objective of implementation of open court concept, Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has commenced live streaming of proceedings of Court no. 1 from Monday.
With this Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench has become the third high court of the Northeast to do so. The live streaming has been done as part of Supreme Court of India eCommittee’s initiative of live streaming court proceedings on priority to imbue greater transparency, inclusivity and foster access to justice as the right to access to justice, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution, encompassed the right to access live court proceedings.
According to registrar of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench Neiko Akami, the live streaming of court proceedings would be available on official YouTube channel ‘eCourts Nagaland’. The link would also be made available on the official website of Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench on https://kohimahighcourtgov.in/.
With proper Internet facility, he said litigants and general public would not have to waste their entire day to view how their matter was proceeding, but instead can view the court proceedings from the comfort of their offices and homes. It would also help give a better understanding of the functioning of courts to the common man.
Akami termed the implementation of live streaming of court proceedings at Kohima Bench as a watershed in the annals of Nagaland judiciary. Despite not having its own high court, he said Nagaland was only the third State in Northeast after Gauhati High Court and Meghalaya High Court to implement live streaming.
