Former minister K. Therie has condemned the BJP-led alliance government for ignoring the words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ in its directive to all departments to observe Constitution Day.
Therie termed the non-inclusion of these two principal words that safeguarded minorities, including Christians, Muslims and other communities, as a surrender of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of India. Accusing the BJP government of deliberately removing these two words in favour of Hindutva, he said it was unfortunate for the people of Nagaland that the state’s representatives were no more than cowards in defending the existence.
According to him, the ruling political parties were not ignorant and that they had no excuse to tell the people that they were not aware of the removal of the two words from the constitution. He said they knew it, but had deliberately observed the Constitution Day without the two words, making no protest to safeguard the people.
“This is approval of UCC and CAA. I for one strongly condemn the actions of the state govt and removal of the words ‘socialist’ and ‘secular’ from the Preamble to the Constitution of India. Given opportunity Congress will restore,” he said.
