Atuo Tevo from Kidima village emerged as the champion of the 62nd Southern Angami Sports Association wrestling cum 3rd edition Dzükou Cup 2024 held at Kimipfüphe ground, Kigwema, on Thursday. In the final match, Atuo beat Kekhrie Yhoshü from Kigwema village to secure the title while Ruokuovituo Lese from Mima village beat Kevidel Mekro from Viswema village to secure the third place.
The winners walked away with cash prizes of Rs, 80,000, Rs 60,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000, while the quarter finalists received Rs 5,000 each.
Earlier, special guest during the inaugural, MLA, Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhütso, in his address suggested that prize money for the winners should be enhanced so that players would be able to make a living out of the game.
He observed that wrestlers give their best to play the game during the hay days of their lives and make many sacrifices which the people should acknowledge.
He said one of the fastest developing games was the belt wrestling which was played even at the international level and therefore since Nagas were already gifted in wrestling it should not pose much of a challenge to players.
Another game which Nagas were gifted was shooting, therefore Rhütso urged players to invest in these two games and be able to make a living out of it.
He said under CM Neiphiu Rio, the state was witnessing drastic improvement in sports and music.
Sharing his thoughts on elections, Rhütso suggested that people should vote for those candidates who are sincere, hardworking, honest and works for the welfare of the people.
He urged the community to be an example by voting for the right candidate and not those with more money.
He wished the best to the players and also hoped the event will be a grand success.
Earlier, the inaugural was chaired by Beto Sale, invocation was chaired by pastor, Khuzama Baptist Church, Mhaphüvi Naleo.
President’s address was delivered by Rokovizo Meze, special number was presented by Rüsiekezhükro, Phesama while Vitsoto Vitsu administered the oath to the players and game officials.
