Unidentified assailants shot dead NSCN (I-M) functionary and kilonser A Khampei Opeiham Konyak at his Industry Ward residence in Tizit town, Mon district on Wednesday night. When contacted, Tizit Police informed Nagaland Post that as per the statement of the family members present at the time of the incident, around five to six masked gunmen had come to his residence and broke open the doors in search of Khampei around 9.15 pm.
Khampei was reportedly dragged out of the house while the family members were locked inside. During the scuffle, it was learnt that the wife was also manhandled by the assailants. The assailants shot Khampei from point blank range on his chest and left him outside the house before fleeing from the scene.
Soon after hearing the commotion, some neighbours rushed to the house, opened the doors. Khampei was later found outisde lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a nearby Primary Health Centre, but later succumbed to his injuries. Officials said that the body of Khampei bore three bullet marks– two on the head and one on the chest.
Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Tizit Police said a case had been registered and the investigation was on.
It may be recalled that Khampei who was earlier the kilonser, CEC and chairman of Konyak region under NSCN-K (Angmai) had joined the NSCN (I-M) in October 2023.
