Commissioner of Police (CP), Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie Monday warned autos found without the mandated display cards would be impounded at the CP office premises until they fulfilled the requirement. He said this while also disclosing that around 50 autos were impounded by Dimapur Police for non-compliance with the new regulation requiring putting up display cards.
Sophie informed that over 800 autos have completed the registration process till the filing of this report.
Under the Auto Rickshaw Display Card System, a photo identity card containing vital information about the auto rickshaw and contact details for traffic control/police control room would be issued to the auto drivers and owners, said Sophie.
He pointed out that it was mandatory for the drivers/owners to prominently display these cards on the windshield and rear of the auto rickshaws for the convenience and safety of passengers.
He further disclosed that display cards, which was being implemented in Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland, would remain valid for a duration of two years, following which renewal would be necessary.
In order to ensure transparency and efficiency, all records would be digitally maintained and routinely updated at the office of the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Dimapur, he said.
He explained the system entailed a meticulous verification process of all auto rickshaw drivers/owners, ensuring the validity of their documents and permits.
He stressed that the system aimed at enhancing road safety and regulate traffic but that due to manpower shortage, the initiative was being launched in phases. Marking a proactive step towards improving traffic management and ensuring safety of the commuters, the Auto Rickshaw Display Card System was announced by the CP here on December 16, 2023.
