A blot on democracy

April 17, 2024 | by admin

Despite boasting about achievements on multiple fronts, the BJP’s failure in Manipur looms large. The state has essentially been handed over to unlawful militias, thriving under the guise of governmental patronage. This has led to a dangerous fragmentation of the state, coupled with targeted attacks on religious minorities, particularly Christians. Manipur, among the most scenic state in the north east, has been embroiled in ethnic violence for nearly a year. The conflict, rooted in long-standing ethnic tensions, has escalated to a point where the very fabric of the state’s society is under threat. The state continues to burn, both literally and metaphorically, as it grapples with violence that has shaken not just the state but the entire nation. In the face of mounting challenges, Manipur stands as a stark symbol of the NDA government’s shortcomings. The prolonged crisis in Manipur serves as a glaring testament to the BJP’s inability to manage the situation effectively. Rather than addressing the root causes, the government’s actions, or lack thereof, have allowed the situation to escalate.

The recent revelation by the Assam Rifles, exposing vested interests behind the chaos, further underscores the dire state of affairs. Even the armed forces find themselves constrained in upholding the rule of law amidst the turmoil. Despite assurances from the Centre, the elusive promise of peace in Manipur remains a distant dream. The Prime Minister’s silence and absence from the state only exacerbate the gravity of the situation. Very rightly so, many feel that the central government’s response has been inadequate, given the gravity of the situation. The N. Biren Singh government has lost all credibility and trust even among Meitei community and his promise to restore peace sounds more hollow as incidents of violence and killings continue to rock the state.

It was also like rubbing salt to injury when the union home minister on his recent visit to Manipur and with Biren Singh by his side, vowed that peace will be restored to Manipur. Currently the people in Manipur will choose two MPs to the Lok Sabha. Interestingly, even the Lok Sabha MP from the state Lorho S. Pfoze (NPF) disclosed he was advised by BJP not to speak on Manipur during the no confidence motion in August 2023.The economic impact of the violence has been significant, with businesses suffering and development projects stalling. The social cost is even higher, with families torn apart and communities living in constant fear. The psychological trauma inflicted on the victims of violence, especially women, may never heal even after years. The casualties of this prolonged unrest serve as silent witnesses to the hollow promises of peace. Despite the ongoing violence, there remains a stubborn optimism that peace will eventually be restored, not just the absence of conflict but a peace that frees the people from the pervasive fear that now dominates their lives. The road to peace is long and arduous. It is peace with justice which will require the collective effort of the state, the central government, and the people themselves. Only then can the haunting fear be lifted, and Manipur can embark on a new chapter of its history. Until concrete actions replace rhetoric, the prospect of stability in Manipur remains uncertain.
