Four-day capacity building on meat production under State Plan 2023-24, was organised by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services in Mokokchung, Phek and Mon. Mokokchung: The programme commenced from June 3 and concluded on June 6, at El-Dora Conference Hall, Mokokchung. At the programme, introduction and keynote address was given by Chief A.H & Veterinary Officer, Mokokchung Dr. Tiachuba Jamir, wherein he mentioned the importance of vaccination in livestock, especially in pigs with CSF (Classical Swine Fever) as the vaccine is available and the disease is prevalent in our district and state. He also emphasized on the importance of hygiene practices in meat production and public health safety.


Various topics ranging from animal housing, breed selection, care and management, feeding management, diseases and healthcare, to marketing strategies of piggery and poultry were presented during the course of the programme.
Resource persons of the programme were Dr. Watitoshi Jamir, Dr. Ketinaro Aier, Dr. Wapangsashi and Dr. Nemjemyanger Kubzari.


The programme was attended by 50 farmers from different blocks under Mokokchung district. Certificates were also given out to the participants. Phek: The training was also held in Phek from June 4 to 7 at chief veterinary office (CVO) Phek. Addressing the gathering, CVO i/c Phek Dr. Esther Krocha highlighted the scope of meat production in Phek district and the discrepancy between the current production and the region’s needs. During the training with PPT, Resource person VAS Pfutsero Dr. Rosou Pohena and VAS Phek Dr. Nusa also spoke on the training programme focusing on the topics ‘Poultry Production and Piggery Production’. The capacity Building programme concluded with a field visit to the state Pig Breeding Centre at Chosaba on the final day. Over 50 participants from villages of different blocks were awarded certificates of participation.


Mon: According to a DIPR report, the training commenced on June 5 at Chief Veterinary Officer’s office, Mon concluded successfully on Saturday. Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Lhuveta Nyekha presented a brief introduction and keynote address on “Hygienic Meat Production and Consumption”.

The resource persons of the programme, Dr. Manjan Konyak, Dr. Sikhambo, Dr. Y. Yawing Konyak and Dr. Pangdun Konyak spoke on, scope of piggery and poultry rearing, site selection and housing management for pigs, selection of breed in pigs, feeding management in pigs, care and management of gilt and sow during pregnancy and farrowing, care and management of newborn piglets, diseases and health care in pigs, housing and floor space management in poultry, advantages of commercial chicks over local chickens, feeding management in poultry, management of layers, common diseases of poultry, and vaccination schedule and health care in poultry. Altogether, 50 progressive farmers from the district avail the training programme.
