Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed grave concern over what it described as “impending influx of Bangladeshi nationals” into North East region following the civil unrest in Bangladesh.
In a press release, DNSU president Hinoto P Aomi and general secretary Michael Kath stated that the potential migration posed a significant threat to the demographic and socio-economic fabric of the region, putting at risk the cultural heritage and traditional way of life of indigenous Naga people.
The union highlighted factors contributing to the looming crisis including economic disparities, political instability, environmental degradation, and cultural affinities.
Further, it said that the porous borders and inadequate enforcement mechanisms exacerbated the situation, rendering the region vulnerable to “uncontrolled migration.”
DNSU has, therefore, underscored the importance of implementing stringent measures to regulate migration, ensure national security, safeguard indigenous rights, manage resources, and preserve cultural identity.
It stressed that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, a crucial tool in border districts like Dimapur, must be rigorously enforced to mitigate the risks associated with uncontrolled migration.
DNSU stated that historical precedents including partition of India and the Bangladesh Liberation War served as stark reminders of the devastating consequences of unregulated migration.
The union maintained that it was resolute in its determination to prevent a repetition of those events, which could irreparably alter the demographic landscape of the Naga homeland.
Highlighting several pressing concerns including demographic upheaval, economic strain and social tensions, the DNSU urged the government of Nagaland to take proactive measures to address those challenges.
It suggested strengthening border security, implementing robust immigration controls, enforcing the ILP system and collaborating with local authorities and community leaders.
DNSU affirmed that any dereliction of duty or compromise on the critical issue would not be tolerated. The union said any individual or entity failing to uphold their responsibilities would be held accountable. “Our homeland is not a haven for illegal immigrants. We will protect our rights, culture, and identity at all costs,” DNSU remarked.
