Konyak Students’ Union (KU) has strongly condemned the “blatant misuse of power by the department concerned” in the recent transfer of the lone Environmental Science (EVS) assistant professor from Wangkhao Government College (WGC).
KSU president Temwang and general secretary A Pangnan in a press note termed the decision as both ill-conceived and highly detrimental, considering the already existing challenges faced by the college.
Pointing out that the WGC currently had 666 students, which was no less than any other college in Nagaland, KSU said the college’s academic environment had been severely compromised with the transfer of the only EVS assistant professor.
As the assistant professor who had been transferred under attachment was the sole educator in the department, they contended that her absence would undoubtedly affect the academic performance and future prospects of the students.
The union reminded the department concerned that the students’ academic outcomes were now in jeopardy due to this irresponsible decision, and cautioned of holding the department accountable for any negative impact on the students’ performance. They mentioned that the recent posting of assistant professors had blatantly neglected the needs of Wangkhao Government College and, by extension, the Konyak community. They said this act of neglect was particularly egregious given that all the relevant facts were already in the public domain.
Further, KSU pointed out that some of the fresh assistant professors were transferred without completing their probation period of two years and, most importantly, without relievers.
Despite being one of the oldest institutions in Nagaland, they lamented that the Wangkhao Government College continued to suffer from a shortage of faculty, and had not yet seen the appointment of a principal after the retirement of the incumbent two month ago, contrary to the requirements of the New Education Policy.
In light of these developments, the KSU leaders called upon the department concerned to immediately revoke the transfer order of the EVS assistant professor and post sufficient assistant professors to ensure the smooth functioning of classes. They warned that failure to address this issue promptly would compel the union to take further action in the best interests of the students .
