Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) has taken strong exception to the appointment of only three lecturers at Wakching New Model College (WNMC) Mon and urged the government to appointed subject lecturers at the lone science college in Mon district.

In a press release, WASU president Longmei TP and assitant general secretary Nokzei P Konyak also expressed dissatisfaction with the higher education directorate’s notification (No.HTE/HE/NPSC/12-7/2022/1388) dated August 28, 2024, regarding the posting of assistant professors to WNMC.

The union pointed out that WNMC was inaugurated on February 3, 2019, but till date, the state government and the department have failed to provide sufficient teaching and non-teaching staff or necessary materials to the college for the past four years.

WASU said that many students from poor backgrounds chose to pursue their interests in honours subjects at the only science college in Mon, but lamented that the state government has “shown a lack of respect and has not provided equal opportunities for these students.”

Further, the union expressed shock that not even a single honours course/subject was introduced at WNMC. The union also stated that due do shortage of teaching faculty, the accommodation of students were less in the current academy.

Therefore, WASU has asked the state government and the higher education department to appoint all incumbent lecturers and assistant professors in accordance with the department/government notification regarding the creation of posts for WNMC.

It also demanded that all non-teaching staff should be appointed in accordance with the post-creation notification. To benefit the students, WASU said specific honours subjects should be provided and allowed.

“Why has the state government delayed or failed to appoint sufficient lecturers at Wakching New Model College?” the WASU asked and sought explanation on the shortage of lecturers.
WASU also asked the state government and the department to look into the matter immediately for the welfare of students and the smooth functioning of classes.
