The Ao Kaketshir Telongjem Kohima (AKTK) celebrated its “Students’ Day”-cum-cultural programme under the theme, “Sobalibaaser Shisaliok Lirometema” at Molu Ki, Kohima with senior advocate Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, C.T. Jamir as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering at the programme, Jamir mentioned that both culture and education together can take a person forward, as they go hand in hand. He asserted that one should love their ancestral place by using their talent to benefit its people and the place, practicing the exogamous marriage system of Ao marriages, understanding the importance of one’s mother tongue as their identity, and being hardworking and truthful as their ancestors did which benefitted the community.

Jamir pointed out that the state has many job avenues, but many educated youths are unemployed as they opt only for government jobs. He said that with the change of time, the mindset of both parents and children should also change.

Jamir added that being educated, one should make an assessment or choice in which field to choose to pursue a career and also know about the aspects of different jobs and profession.

He therefore called upon the students to work hard, endured the troubles and pains, and step out from their comfort zones and prepared to lead the future.

In his short speech, Kohima Ao Telongjem president, T. Chubayanger, emphasized that without mother tongue, there can be no culture, as it confirms one’s identity and community he or she belongs.

He said that youths today feel that language is only for communication and that least importance is given to one’s mother tongue, as it would result in losing their identity and become a castaway from one’s own community.

He therefore urged everyone to put in efforts to preserve and give importance to their own mother tongue. At the event, eight students from Kohima who have topped the HSLC and HSSLC examination 2024 were awarded the AKTK meritorious award.

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by AKTK president, Sentilong Longchar while the vote of thanks was proposed by AKTK general secretary, Moasunep. The function was marked with folksongs, folk dance and special song. (DIPR)
