Emergence of Trumpism

In the American political landscape, the ideological divide between Donald Trump’s political ideology or ‘Trumpism’ versus the ultra-liberal so-called progressive liberalism of the Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris are two poles of the American political spectrum. ‘Trumpism’ champions nationalism, the America founded on the principles of the founding fathers, economic populism, and a confrontational stance against established norms, often promoting a protectionist, “America First” approach. In contrast ; Harris represents an urbanized progressive vision that emphasizes inclusivity, extreme secularism, social equity, and multilateral cooperation. In the 2024 campaign, Democrats, led by Vice President Kamala Harris, assembled a broad coalition of influential voices—from prominent media figures and Hollywood celebrities to leading LGBTQ+ advocates and progressive policymakers. However, despite this sweeping support, voters ultimately reaffirmed their preference for Trump’s agenda, signalling a desire to prioritize policies they believe more closely align with their values. For many Trump supporters, this choice was about resisting an elite, urban-dominated culture that, in their view, has veered too far from the concerns and principles of the average American.Throughout both his presidency and the gruelling campaign season, Trump faced an unprecedented array of legal battles and controversies as the Biden administration weaponised the legal system to derail Trump’s candidacy. Trump’s decision to confront these accusations directly instead of retreating only strengthened his appeal, reinforcing his image as a fighter willing to endure hardship to protect his supporters’ interests. His resilience in the face of adversity has become a defining part of his brand and an emblem of his perceived commitment to his followers’ values. Trump’s rhetoric and policies have included opposition to initiatives like critical race theory in education and against allowing transgender athletes compete in sports, viewed as progressive overreach. One of the most worrisome issue in America today is immigration. This is one policy area that clearly highlights the divide. Trump’s approach emphasizes strict border control, including the construction of a border wall and enforcement of aggressive deportation policies. For Trumpists, strict immigration measures are crucial for maintaining national security and protecting American jobs. Harris’s stance, however, reflects the liberal view that immigrants are vital contributors to American society. She supports comprehensive immigration reforms, including pathways to citizenship and protections for Dreamers (undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children). Harris in principle, upholds border security but under her watch the border gates were thrown open on the plea of recognising the humane treatment of migrants and addressing root causes of migration in countries of origin. In terms of political communication, Trumpism relies on direct talks that appeal to voter frustrations with the political establishment and eschews political correctness. Harris’s progressive liberalism, by contrast, focuses on systemic reform through measured, policy-driven changes aimed at achieving social cohesion and addressing inequalities. Ultimately, this divide between Trumpism’s America first approach and Harris’s inclusive agenda reflects broader ideological polarization in the United States. The election results prove that Trumpism appeals to a growing segment of Americans who value traditionalism and national sovereignty, while progressive Harris’ liberalism appealed to those seeking expanded rights, diversity, and international cooperation. America has spoken and in favour of Trumpism which in the next four years is likely to impact geo-politics.
