As Nagaland gears up for the 25th edition of the annual Hornbill Festival, the state’s law enforcement agencies have put in place a comprehensive security and traffic management plan to ensure a smooth and safe experience for the tourists and visitors.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, additional director general of police (ADGP) Renchamo Kikon highlighted the security arrangements and traffic advisories in place for the festival, which would be held at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama, from December 1-10.

“With the festival just 72 hours away, we anticipate a significant increase in footfall from both domestic and international tourists. While we do not foresee any untoward incidents, we are leaving nothing to chance,” ADGP said.

Given the expected surge in vehicular movement, Kohima police have issued a traffic advisory to streamline travel to and from Kisama.

Vehicles without valid car passes would be directed to park at designated grounds in Kigwema and Phesama, from where a “free shuttle bus service” would transport visitors to the festival venue.

“This is the first time we are introducing a free shuttle service to ease congestion on the roads and ensure timely arrival at Kisama,” ADGP informed.

He also acknowledged the challenges posed by the limited road infrastructure. “With only one national highway connecting Kohima to Kisama, managing traffic will be a critical task. We urge visitors to follow the traffic guidelines and cooperate with the authorities,” ADGP appealed.

To ensure the safety of tourists, a significant number of tourist police personnel have been deployed, with their strength increased to over 80 officers. Tourist police booths would be set up at key locations to assist visitors and address any concerns.

“The Hornbill Festival is a matter of pride for Nagaland, and we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone,” ADGP said, adding that “escort officers have been sensitized to handle situations with care and professionalism.” The police have urged visitors to adhere to the security protocols and cooperate with law enforcement personnel to make the festival a successful and incident-free event.
