Following appeal by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) and Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC), Yimkhiung Akherü Arihako (YAA) and Tikhir Students’ Union (TSU) have announced temporarily withholding their November 25 ultimatum to the state government for implementing its March 23, 2022 notification and the September 29, 2023 Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) order pertaining to 25% backward tribes quota reservation.
The YAA and TSU in a press communiqué said both the YTC and TTC had assured them that they would endeavour to address the matter with the government, prioritising the interests of both communities while fostering unity among all on this ongoing auspicious occasion.
According to the YAA and TSU, the reservation policy was a provision intended to uplift educationally, socially, and economically disadvantaged communities and tribes. However, they termed the state government’s inaction in implementing the reservation policy in its entirety as nothing less than a deliberate attempt to degrade the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes.
They stressed that it was imperative that the government took immediate action to implement the reservation policy in its entirety, ensuring that the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes received the benefits they were entitled to.
They cautioned that anything less would be a betrayal of the trust placed in the government to uphold the principles of social justice and equality.
In seeking justice for the injustice meted out by the government towards the Yimkhiung and Tikhir tribes, they asserted that along with the citizens they would pursue and initiate all available measures to secure justice.
They reiterated that the government was duty-bound to implement its own notification of March 23, 2022, in its entirety and strictly adhere to the Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) order of September 29, 2023 regarding the 25% reservation without any much ado or fuss.
Further, extending their sincerest gratitude to all federating units, subordinate bodies, and citizens of both the tribes for their unwavering support, the YAA and TSU also appealed them to remain optimistic regarding the outcome while maintaining a state of preparedness for any eventuality that might follow in due course of time.
