The Nagaland Chess Association (NCA) has sent its Vice President, Mohokiya Apon, to Singapore to support Grandmaster (GM) D Gukesh in his ongoing battle at the World Chess Championship.
The prestigious match, which began on November 25, features reigning World Champion Ding Liren of China and Challenger GM D Gukesh, and will determine the next World Chess Champion. The match is scheduled to conclude on December 15.
While it is common to see officials from Indian sports federations travel to international competitions such as the Olympics and Asian Games, this marks a significant milestone for the Nagaland Chess Association. This is the first time that the NCA has had the privilege of sending one of its officials abroad to witness the World Chess Championship.
In addition to Apon, over 40 officials from the All India Chess Federation (AICF) have travelled to Singapore to lend their support to GM D Gukesh. These officials will not be present for the entire duration of the match; some will return in the coming days, while others will stay until the final round of the Championship.
