India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 25 at the age of 92 after a brief illness at AIIMS, New Delhi. A globally celebrated economist and a statesman of unparalleled integrity, Dr. Singh leaves behind a lasting legacy of reform and service that profoundly shaped modern India.Dr. Singh’s entry into politics during the 1991 economic crisis marked a pivotal moment in India’s history. Appointed Finance Minister by Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, he spearheaded bold reforms that rescued India from a crippling balance of payments crisis. His measures-devaluing the rupee, reducing import tariffs, and privatizing state enterprises-ushered in an era of unprecedented growth, laying the foundation for India’s economic transformation. From 1991 to 2013, Dr. Singh served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, cementing his reputation as a cornerstone of India’s political and economic evolution. Despite his loss in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, at his maiden entry into elective politics, his leadership qualities and expertise propelled him to the nation’s highest office. On May 22, 2004, he made history as India’s 14th Prime Minister, becoming the first Sikh to hold the position. Notably, he became the first leader since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term. Taking office in 2004, Dr. Singh inherited a nation fraught with communal tensions following the 2002 Gujarat riots. His calm and inclusive leadership fostered stability and renewed focus on economic and social development. Among his most significant achievements was the landmark India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement, a testament to his diplomatic acumen. At the risk of losing the vote in parliament, Dr Singh dug his heels to face the alliance partner the Left and CPM who joined hands with the BJP to topple his government over the Indo-US nuclear deal. Dr Singh stood firm and won the vote by a whisker and earned the sobriquet ‘Singh Is King’ for a deal that bolstered India’s global standing.Under his administration, transformative social initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) were launched, providing essential employment to millions and uplifting rural communities. While his tenure laid the groundwork for critical reforms such as the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which came into effect after his term, it also demonstrated his foresight in modernizing India’s economic framework. Dr. Singh’s political demeanor was characterized by humility, restraint, and a steadfast focus on governance. Avoiding political theatrics, he let his work speak volumes, earning respect across party lines. Even amidst personal and political attacks, he maintained his dignity, choosing to correct facts when necessary but never lowering himself to hostility or divisive rhetoric. Dr. Singh’s legacy is one of principled leadership and unwavering commitment to public service. His tenure exemplified how progress, compassion, and integrity can coexist in governance.
