A tale of 3 parties

January 15, 2025 | by admin

The political landscape in Delhi is charged with intensity as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gears up to challenge the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the upcoming assembly elections. Known for its combative campaigns, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned, including deploying central probe agencies against AAP’s leadership, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as the prime target. This no-holds-barred strategy underscores the stakes for the BJP, determined to dislodge the AAP from its stronghold. For its part, the AAP is far from a passive adversary. Over the years, it has proven its mettle as a resilient and strategic force, capable of matching the BJP in leadership and electoral tactics. Kejriwal’s governance record and political acumen have cemented AAP’s image as a formidable opponent. However, the AAP must also contend with a rival opposition party, the Congress, whose political fortunes in Delhi have dwindled since Kejriwal rose to prominence. The Congress’s decline in Delhi is emblematic of its larger national struggles. Once a dominant force under Sheila Dikshit, who oversaw Delhi’s transformation during her 15-year tenure, the party has failed to recover from its 2013 electoral debacle. The seeds of its collapse were arguably sown during the Anna Hazare-led India Against Corruption movement, where Kejriwal played a pivotal role. This movement not only eroded public trust in the Congress but also paved the way for AAP’s ascendancy. The problem with the Congress is that the party exists for the family and therefore has no leaders but only followers and has left it floundering. At the national leadership the party is often criticized for being disengaged. To add to its woes, Rahul Gandhi’s frequent foreign jaunts have delayed campaign launches which do little to inspire confidence. After returning from abroad, Rahul began the belated campaign by launching scathing attacks on both Kejriwal and Narendra Modi, but these efforts appear belated and likely ineffective in reversing the party’s fortunes. Adding to the Congress’s woes is its tenuous relationship with other opposition parties in the INDIA bloc. All INDIA bloc parties are backing the AAP against the BJP in Delhi and deepening the chasm at the national level. In Delhi and Punjab, the Congress and AAP are locked in direct competition, undermining the bloc’s unity. Rahul Gandhi’s critiques of Kejriwal, including showing video clips highlighting Delhi’s failing civic infrastructure and pollution, reflect the deep-seated rivalry between the two parties, despite their shared opposition to the BJP. To the delight of the AAP, it has received support from several INDIA bloc allies, such as- Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction), Trinamool Congress, and Rashtriya Janata Dal. This backing underscores the AAP’s growing influence and the isolation and decline of the Congress at the national level in challenging the BJP in key states. The Congress risks further marginalization, reduced to a spoiler role in current Delhi elections contested by AAP and BJP. It is clear that the upcoming Delhi elections highlight the stark contrasts between the BJP’s aggressive tactics, AAP’s resilience, and the Congress’s decline. For the Congress, reclaiming relevance in Delhi remains a distant dream, while the AAP and BJP vie for supremacy in this high-stakes contest. The outcome will not only shape Delhi’s future but also signal the shifting dynamics of Indian politics.
