Defending champion XI Brothers Chukitong retained their title of the 14th Lotha Football Championship after defeating Nitsüyan FC 3-1 in the final on Wednesday at the public ground in Wokha.
The final match commenced after the short closing ceremony, with XI Brothers opening their account in the sixth minute through the boots of Mhabemo Kikon, which was equalized by Nchum Murry in the ninth minute for Nitsyan FC.
The first half saw an intense display of football from both XI Brothers and Nitsyan FC, ending 1-1 after 45 minutes. Defending champions XI Brothers launched a strong attack in the second half, with Toka scoring a goal for the team in the 79th minute. Substitute player Wonrhon, who replaced Benri in the 60th minute, scored two goals for XI Brothers in the 81st and 90+ minutes, ending the match with a 4-1 victory.
The closing ceremony was graced by Achumbemo Kikon, MLA who addressed the gathering with a call for discipline, sportsmanship, and community responsibility.
In his speech, Kikon emphasized the need for spectators to foster a positive and peaceful atmosphere during matches. He highlighted that aggression and indiscipline, both among players and the crowd, hinder the growth of football in Nagaland. “Anger is one letter short of danger,” he remarked, urging players and fans alike to focus on promoting the sport with integrity. He noted that while Nagaland has talented footballers, issues with temperament, anger, and discipline prevent them from competing effectively at higher levels.
Touching upon the condition of Wokha’s public ground, Kikon appealed to the landowners to compromise for the betterment of the Lotha community. He acknowledged the emotional connection the Lothas have with the ground and expressed the government’s readiness to develop it into a modern facility, including the possibility of an astro turf. He stated that the four MLAs are eager to bring development during their tenure and requested the landowners to kindly consider compromising for the betterment of the Lothas.
Kikon also addressed the issue of littering at the event venue, pointing out the accumulation of plastic bottles and wrappers. He urged the public to maintain cleanliness in public spaces just as they do at home.
He further reiterated the importance of combating drug abuse and urged the players not to indulge in drugs and alcohol but rather focus on sports and healthy lifestyle.
The president of the Wokha District Football Association, N Samuel Ezung expressed gratitude for the successful completion of the tournament. Ezung also appealed to the MLA for a better ground for the players of the district.
The programme was chaired by tournament secretary, Lipenthung Ovung, invocation by Sr. Asso. Pastor Longsa Baptist Church M. Phyantsulumo Kikon and special song was presented by Sojano Tsopoe.
