The 53rd Angami Sports Association (ASA) Games & Sports Meet 2025 commenced at IG Stadium, Kohima, on Thursday, with Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, IAS, as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Ramnikant underscored the transformation of sports into a full-time profession and urged young athletes to take it seriously. He emphasized that sports was no longer just a pastime but a viable career path with significant earning potential. While talent was important, he said, proper guidance and platforms were crucial for growth. “Good sportspersons need polishing, and this is the right platform to refine your skills,” he stated.
Encouraging participants to give their best, he described the meet as a competition among the best talents, with potential for some to represent the country. He stressed that discipline was key to success in any field and that sports could shape individuals into strong, competitive professionals.
Highlighting the role of sports in global influence, he noted that military might was not the only source of power. “Soft power—through sports, music, and other platforms—allows us to make an impact on the world stage,” he added.
ASA president Ruokuovikho Chale, in his address, described the event as more than a sports meet, calling it a movement built on endurance and respect. He emphasized that ASA provided equal opportunities to all, regardless of economic background, and expressed hope that the event would foster unity and professional growth among athletes. He also acknowledged past leaders and mentors who had played a vital role in promoting youth and sports.
Chale highlighted ASA’s recent achievements, including winning 9 gold, 11 silver, and 4 bronze medals at the 12th AITWPF National TW & PK Championship in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, and securing two championship titles and a second-place finish at the International Hornbill Naga Wrestling Championship in Chiechama.
He affirmed ASA’s commitment to selecting and promoting talent, ensuring young athletes find platforms to advance in their careers. The inaugural ceremony was chaired by ASA vice president Neisavotuo Whuorie, with an invocation pronounced by Ruokuovinuo Noudi, director of the Angami Baptist Thenuko Krotho. A special song was presented by Setiekuolie Bio and friends, while ASA games secretary Thepfuzho-o Viswentso administered the oath-taking ceremony.
The ASA Games & Sports Meet 2025 will feature multiple events, providing athletes with opportunities to showcase their talent and pursue professional careers in sports.
The two-day event will witness events including football, volleyball and sepak takraw.
