As part of its ongoing anti-drug campaign, the state excise department has appealed to all the Churches, NGOs working in the field of substance abuse & rehabilitation, recovering addicts, families and relatives of drug abusers to share information and intelligence on illicit drug trade, including details about suspected peddlers, suppliers, etc., involved in narcotics trade.
In a press release, joint commissioner of excise (NC) S. Phyobemo Kikon assured to protect the identities of any person/persons with information. The excise department also appealed to the government for strengthening the department with adequate manpower, modern infrastructure and facilities and state-of-the-art equipment in order to overcome challenges and enhance its efficiency in performing duty.
The department has strictly warned that any possession, sale, purchase, use, consumption, transport, import, and export of illicit drugs were serious offences under Section 8 NDPS Act and would attract stringent penalties including death penalty for certain offences u/s 31A of the NDPS Act on conviction.
