Sovima Village Council (SVC) Chümoukedima Friday resolved to strictly implement the provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act of 2003 (COTPA) and warned shops violating those provisions would be penalised and their trade licenses cancelled forthwith.
SVC secretary Ruokuosilie Rupreo reminded that the Act prohibits sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to persons under 18 years of age and also in an area within a radius of one hundred yards of any educational institution. However, SVC observed that there were shops selling such products in close proximity of educational institutions in the village.
Therefore, SVC reiterated strict implement of its earlier resolution to expel from the village any person found selling intoxicants/psychotropic substances. It said that property from where the sale of those banned substances are been found, would be seized by the council.
SVC said youth volunteers accompanied by GBs/VCMs would conduct regular checking to implement those resolutions and necessary actions would be taken on the spot against defaulters.
