The 25th anniversary edition of the NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy is set to take place from September 13 to October 18, 2025, marking a historic milestone for the tournament.
In a departure from tradition, the event will be hosted in both Kohima and Chümoukedima for the first time, expanding its reach beyond the state capital.
This was announced by Kelhouneizo Yhome, member of the Steering Committee, during a press conference held at Hotel Japfü, here, on Sunday. Since its inception, the tournament has always been held in Kohima.
However, in celebration of its silver jubilee, the organizing committee has decided to expand the venue to Chümoukedima, ensuring greater participation and outreach, Yhome added. As part of the 39th anniversary of the NSF Martyrs’ Day, a “Trophy Tour” will be launched on March 20 at the NSF Martyrs’ Park in Kohima.
Announcing the initiative, Medo Yhokha, convenor of the Steering Committee, revealed that the trophy will travel across all Naga homelands, covering every corner of Nagaland and beyond. This 178-day journey will culminate in Kohima during the first week of September.
Yhokha appealed to all Nagas to pray for the success of the event, emphasizing that the tour serves as a symbol of respect and commitment to honoring the sacrifices of the martyrs. He highlighted that the tour also seeks to acknowledge the contributions of individuals from all walks of life who have fought for the rights of the Naga people.
“This is more than just a football event. It is an opportunity for today’s leaders to foster unity and bridge the fragmentation within Naga society. We must uphold the spirit of oneness,” he said, adding that the Steering Committee is actively working with stakeholders across Nagaland to ensure the trophy reaches every part of the region.
The total prize pool for this year’s tournament has been set at Rs. 15 lakhs, with an entry fee of Rs. 10,000 per team. Further details regarding team registrations will be announced soon. Neizokhotuo Belho, secretary of the Steering Committee, urged football clubs to register through recognized associations to ensure smooth coordination.
He also called on the State Government to prioritize sports infrastructure and provide incentives for players representing Nagaland. While acknowledging the progress made over the years, he stressed the need for better facilities and further development of playing grounds to support the growing football community.
Providing a historical perspective, NSF assistant general secretary, Kenilo Kent, recounted the origins of the trophy. The tournament was established in memory of late Kekuojalie Sachü and late Vikhozo Yhoshü, two students who were killed on March 20, 1986, during a peaceful protest organized by the NSF.
The demonstration was against the State government’s decision to introduce Indian Police Service (IPS) cadres and extend the Disturbed Area Belt along the Indo-Myanmar border. Kent emphasized that the trophy remains a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and the fight for justice, making the tournament much more than just a sporting event.
Reflecting on the growth of the tournament, Khrielievi Chüsi, co-chairman of the Steering Committee, noted that while the Angami Students’ Union (ASU) initially organized the event, it has since evolved into a major platform uniting all Naga students over the years. And as a part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary, a steering committee was formed along with the Naga Students’ Federation and other stakeholders.
“This silver jubilee edition, themed ‘Goal for Peace,’ will send a strong message of unity and harmony among the Naga people. We are deeply grateful to all well-wishers who have supported this event for the past 25 years, enabling its success without government assistance,” Chüsi stated.
In a call for broader participation, ASU president, Khriesamhalie David Mere, extended an invitation to teams from across the country, including past trophy holders, to take part in this year’s edition. He underscored the role of sports in promoting peace, unity, and camaraderie among communities.
