Nagaland governor, La Ganesan, on Friday asserted that the proposed inland waterway, linking Myanmar’s Chindwin River to Nagaland’s Tizu River, was a key development project.
According to PRO Raj Bhavan, the governor said this while addressing the people during his visit to Meluri district on March 28, 2025. Governor disclosed that the proposed inland waterway was expected to serve as a strategic trade link with Southeast Asia, positioning Meluri as an international trade hub.
Further, the governor said that the International Trade Centre at Avangkhu would further strengthen the region’s role as Nagaland’s gateway to ASEAN nations.
Ganesan emphasized on the region’s bright future and developmental potential and expressed his happiness on visiting the district. Governor congratulated the people and acknowledged the efforts of chief minister Neiphiu Rio for officially inaugurating Meluri district on February 21, 2025.
“Meluri may be the youngest district of our state, but it holds immense promise for a bright future,” Ganesan remarked. Describing the district as “the Land of Fortunes,” the governor highlighted its rich mineral resources, biodiversity, tourism potential, and scenic beauty.
Ganesan also underscored the state government’s commitment to enhancing road and transport infrastructure, particularly the connectivity between Meluri, the state capital, and Avangkhu, which borders Myanmar. “These advancements will pave the way for economic growth and better access to essential services,” Ganesan said.
However, the governor stressed that infrastructure alone cannot drive progress. “It is the people, their unity, and their collective spirit that turn vision into reality,” he said.
The governor urged the citizens, government departments, and organizations to take an active role in ensuring the success of developmental initiatives.
Emphasizing the importance of quality education and healthcare, the governor called for well-equipped hospitals and schools that would nurture future leaders and innovators.
Making an appeal for peace and cooperation, Ganesan urged the people of Meluri to embrace unity and dialogue.
Reflecting on the national vision for progress, the governor reiterated the importance of collective participation in achieving ‘Viksit Bharat 2047,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047.
PRO informed the event marked a significant milestone for the newly established district, with leaders and residents looking ahead to a promising future driven by infrastructure, trade, and community spirit.
During the governors visit, departmental reports were presented by Medical, PHED, Education, Agriculture and NHIDCL. The governor also held a security coordination meeting at 39 Assam Rifles COB Meluri.
Advisor for New & Renewable Energy, NSDMA, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe and Pochury Hoho president also spoke at the programme. The welcome address and overview of the district was given by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Meluri, Mhathung Tsanglao.
