Need to check violence

Inter-tribal or village frictions and passions have persisted among tribes in Nagaland for a long time, whether over land, grievances, or occurrences that have resulted in the deaths of dozens. At times, the fights resembled a full-fledged inter-tribe or village battle, but sanity and reason kept them from growing any further, which is a little consolation. Naga politics is not only about Nagaland state, but also about tribes living in peace and some fighting among tribes or villages. The event occurred on March 28, when some people were injured in a shooting incident involving an inter-village conflict. According to police authorities, the conflict was between Laruri village (containing Sutsu Village) and Mimi village (with satellite villages such as Mutingkhong and Kohongka). The episode has simply helped to remind the public and the state administration that violence appears to be an alternative for resolving conflicts. The unjustified cause for the firing was supposedly a long-pending land dispute that the government had not expected to erupt into violence. District officials and law enforcement agencies have not been entirely successful in averting the firing incident resulting from territory conflicts between various villages. It is not that the district law enforcement failed, but it served as a stark reminder that they must develop effective preventive strategies to address the issue. This is so since there are several occurrences around the state which have exposed the usage of contemporary weapons. It is clear that those who carried out raids or attacks were well-armed miscreants. In general, individuals advocate peaceful conflict settlement, yet they are either powerless or complicit in supporting the use of force by their own group(s) for defensive or offensive purposes. The apex tribe groups have worked hard to promote peace and harmony among distinct communities. However, a small group continues to stir the flames of hatred and violence. When tensions aren’t running high, everyone looks to be willing to live in peace and harmony. Any injury or death complicates the healing of previous wounds. To prevent revenge killings, state and district officials must take a proactive approach and place contested regions under the control of police and security personnel. Also, the favorite lexicon both “unity” and “peace” that has become the keyword in the Naga socio-political arena require a process, which is to promote a free society in which various sections live in harmony so that the resultant harmony allows the creation of a conducive balm for boosting self-esteem and confidence in the system. A vital link for promoting unity, peace, and harmony necessitates certain additional needs from persons at all levels of society. One of them is sensible thinking in the midst of hyper hyperbole, and recognizing that in a rapidly developing world, a world without peaceful approaches to problems is not worth all the clichés. The state government should consider a long-term plan to bring all parties involved in disputes to the table, including the apex tribe, social, and religious organizations. Authorities in communities with unresolved issues should make a vow not to allow any element to turn the disputes into violence.
