The Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN) has expressed profound grief over the demise of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, 2025.

In a press release, CAN president Johnny Ruangmei said that CAN, representing the laity faithful of the Diocese of Kohima, joined Catholics across the world in mourning the loss of the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

Describing Pope Francis as a beacon of compassion, humility and love, CAN stated that the Pope touched countless lives through his ministry and commitment to the poor, marginalized, and the environment. “Jesus Christ personified, His Holiness Pope Francis was the beacon of hope, compassion and love for the era of 21st century,” the statement read.

CAN said Pope Francis’ return to his eternal home was a great loss for the universal Church, but added that the love and light he radiated would remain a source of healing and guidance for humanity. “The love he radiated to the world will remain as an anchor of healing for humanity in moments of despair,” it stated.

Together with the Bishop of Kohima, Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, CAN said the Catholic community of Nagaland commends the soul of the Holy Father to the mercy of God.

As a mark of respect, CAN has urged all Catholic faithful in the Diocese of Kohima to offer special prayers on the day of Pope Francis’ funeral. A prayer released by CAN invokes eternal rest for the late Pope and divine guidance for the College of Cardinals as they prepare to elect his successor.

CAN also called on all members of the Catholic Church to remain united in prayer and uphold the legacy of Pope Francis through faith, humility, and service.

NJCF: Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF) has expressed sorrow on the demise of Pope Francis. The forum extended prayers and condolences to the Vatican family, Catholics around the world, and especially those in Nagaland.

In a condolence note NJCF president, Rev. Dr. N. Paphino and secretary Rev. Moses Murry said that the forum prayed for God’s comfort upon leaders attending the funeral and guidance in the selection of future leaders to shepherd the Christian community.

NJCF extended solidarity with Catholic brethren during the time of grief and prayed for God’s peace and guidance and strength upon the Christian community.
