A state-level workshop on “Empowering Governance and Development by Lev-eraging Geospatial Resources” was held at de-Oriental Grand, Kohima, bringing together ex-perts, officials, and policymakers to discuss advancements in geospatial technology in Kohima on April 30.
According to DIPR report, the event was jointly organized by the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre (NGISRSC), Planning and Transformation Department, Government of Na-galand, and the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Department of Space, Government of India.
The inaugural session was graced by Temsunaro Aier, Development Commissioner, Planning & Transformation, as the guest of honour. Nounesenuo S. Iralu, deputy project director of NGISRSC, chaired the session, while the keynote address was delivered by Er. Mhathung Kithan, senior project director, NGISRSC.
In her speech, Temsunaro Aier described the event as a crucial initiative to increase aware-ness, build technical capacity, and foster collaboration for integrating geospatial resources into governance and development efforts.
She highlighted the contributions of the Nagaland GIS & Remote Sensing Centre, established in 2006, and its successful completion of 15 Plan of Action (PoA) projects—10 supported by the North Eastern Council (NEC) through NESAC, and five funded by state resources.
She emphasized the importance of the North Eastern Spatial Data Repository (NeSDR) as a transformative platform, enabling smarter decision-making and facilitating advancements in infrastructure planning, disaster preparedness, and resource management.
Stressing geospatial technology’s role beyond mapping, she urged departments to integrate space-based solutions into their projects to enhance real-time governance, efficiency, and scientific validation.
Delivering the keynote address, Er. Mhathung Kithan underscored the necessity of coordina-tion among departments for effective data sharing and implementation of geospatial applica-tions.
He also expressed appreciation for NESAC, Nagaland GIS, and other participat-ing departments for their contributions, reinforcing the vision for a resilient, inclusive, and geospatially empowered future for Nagaland.
The workshop featured two technical segments: Discussions on PoA projects by NGISRSC/NRSC, followed by case studies on advanced e-Governance applications by NESAC and presentations on NeSDR, including a live geoportal demonstration, showcasing its functionalities in data registration, visualization, and analytics.
NESAC also shared in-sights on ISRO/DOS satellite data portals and their applications. The event concluded with a feedback and valedictory session, where Dr. D Chutia, Head of GID, NESAC, delivered the valedictory address.
