The Niuland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NCCI) has reiterated the demand for a reserved nominee in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), warning that an indefinite shutdown will be enforced if the government does not meet its demand.

During a meeting with the government on May 3, the District Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) issued a 14-day ultimatum, urging the officials to take action.

In a press release, NCCI president Kawoto Aye and general secretary Hito Achumi cautioned that failure to address their request within the given time frame would result in a district-wide shutdown.

The chamber reiterated its commitment to defending business interests and ensuring fair representation in local governance. It stated that its demand was not motivated by personal ambition but rather a desire to serve the business community and protect consumer rights.

As key stakeholders in ULBs, the chamber argued that the business sector deserves recognition for its role in civic administration.

NCCI also criticized the government for appointing non-resident and inexperienced individuals to ULB positions, claiming that such actions weaken transparency and local self-governance.

Referring to the April 30, 2025, cabinet decision (Vide Order No. MA-65/2016(PT)52), which allows a District Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) representative to take part in discussions on price regulations and essential commodities—but without voting rights—the NCCI insisted that full nominee representation is non-negotiable.

The chamber further clarified that the proposal originally came from the Urban Development & Municipal Affairs (UD&MA) department but was firmly rejected by the DCCIs.

PDCCI flays cabinet decision

Peren District Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PDCCI) has strongly condemned the recent cabinet decision and press statement made by Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department additional secretary T Nchumbemo Udyuo regarding nominees for business community in urban local bodies (ULBs).

PDCCI secretary Irangbui in a press release pointed out that as per the Nagaland Municipal Act (NMA), 2023 the demand for nominee for the business community was a legitimate and statutory right. Hence, he said the cabinet decision fell short of the trade body’s expectations and was a total mockery of Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CNCCI) as a whole.

Requesting the government to reconsider the decision and bring out fair and just outcome, PDCCI reaffirmed that the trade body stood firm with CNCCI and remain united with other DCCIs in this regard.

PDCCI urged the government to revoke this decision and ensure that the rights of the business community were protected.
