Deputy chief minister TR Zeliang urged government school teachers to rededicate themselves and resolve to revitalise their respective schools, and upholds values.

Noting that education was the cornerstone of a progressive society and schools served as a cradle of knowledge, Zeliang, who was speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of PM Shri Government High School DC Colony, Peren, stressed that government school teachers should embrace modern teaching methods, innovative thinking and critical learning strategies to mould students and help them face challenges of contemporary world.

He appealed the government teachers not to neglect their noble responsibility, but rededicate their time for students with discipline, punctuality, and compassion so as to make government schools an excellent place of learning.

He said the teachers must inspire students not only to seek job, but also to be good human being and change makers in the community. According to him, gone were the days when merely passing exams and obtaining certificate was enough to secure jobs and make livelihood. As the scenario had changed completely now, he stressed giving more efforts to meet the demands of contemporary world.

Zeliang also suggested relooking urgently into deployment and rationalisation of teachers in government schools across the state to ensure that no school was left with shortage of teaching staff.

Urging the students of government schools not to harbour any inferiority complex with the feeling that students in private schools performed better than them, the deputy chief minister acknowledged that there was a common narrative in the state that students studying in private schools performed better than students in government schools, which he termed as a wrong perception.

On the contrary, he pointed out that the students of government schools were supposed to perform better than their counterparts in private schools as the government schools teachers were more qualified, well trained and well paid than those in private schools.

He emphasised that success was not completely determined by schools the students attended but by sheer hard work and will power to excel. Hence, he urged the students to work hard and aim high to succeed in their lives.

School Education and SCERT adviser Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome also spoke on the occasion as a guest of honor. The celebration was marked by colourful performances by the students in the presence of other senior government officials and public leaders. This was stated in a press release issued by the deputy chief minister’s office.
