A clogged drain has led to stagnant water overflowing near Axis Bank at Clock Tower Junction, emitting a foul stench and posing health and unhygienic problems for residents, business owners, and pedestrians.
Local shopkeepers and passersby told this Reporter that the issue has persisted for days with no action from authorities. The stagnant water has also become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising health concerns.
One shopkeeper remarked: “The smell is unbearable, especially when the sun heats up the water.” Pedestrians struggle to navigate the sidewalk, and during rains, the water overflows onto the street, making movement nearly impossible.
Residents have called for immediate intervention to clear the blockage and implement a long-term drainage solution. The narrow, poorly maintained drainage system clogged quickly, causing sewage-mixed rainwater to spill onto the lanes.
Though most shops were closed, some shopkeepers rushed to set up makeshift barriers to protect their stores. Still, several shops suffered water damage to goods.
Frustrated vendors and shoppers highlighted that flooding is a recurring issue. “Every year it’s the same story,” said a shopkeeper and lamented that little has been done to prevent recurrence.
