The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has ramped up its sanitation and maintenance efforts citywide, prioritising the clearing of clogged drains, removal of debris, and overall beautification of the urban landscape in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.
As part of this proactive initiative, DMC personnel have been actively clearing drainage systems choked with garbage, silt, and construction waste—identified as major contributors to waterlogging in residential and commercial zones during heavy rains.
DMC chairman Hukheto Yepthomi told Nagaland Post that the drive aims not only at resolving immediate drainage blockages but also tackling underlying issues such as the obstruction of natural water outlets and illegal encroachments.
“Much of Dimapur’s drainage crisis stems from blocked or built-over natural rainwater outlets due to unauthorised constructions. We are committed to restoring these drainage pathways and acting against such encroachments,” Hukheto said.
He added that DMC is actively mapping areas where drains have been diverted or narrowed by encroachments and will coordinate with relevant departments to initiate corrective actions in line with long-term flood mitigation and city planning goals.
Alongside drain clearance, DMC has undertaken sweeping of major roads, weed removal, and consistent garbage collection across various wards. Municipal workers have been deployed in shifts to ensure maximum coverage.
Hukheto also appealed to citizens to avoid dumping waste into drains and public spaces, stressing that sustained cleanliness can only be achieved through public cooperation.
The civic body affirmed that the sanitation drive will continue regularly, with stronger monitoring and enforcement mechanisms to ensure lasting impact as the city braces for the monsoon.
