In a significant step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of young citizens venturing outside the state for work or education, the Mon District Police on May 17 launched the “Youth Migration Monitoring & Safety” programme at the SP Office, Mon.
According to a DIPR report, this landmark initiative, also known as “Mon Migration Trail”, was formally inaugurated in the presence of the Rajya Sabha MP, S. Phangnon Konyak, Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Wennyei Konyak and Superintendent of Police, Mon, Kanchan Kumar Kandpal.
Speaking at the launch, S. Phangnon Konyak lauded the programme as a timely and compassionate intervention, addressing the growing challenges faced by young individuals leaving the state. She emphasized the importance of community-based, technology-enabled solutions in safeguarding migrant youth.
DC, Wennyei Konyak, praised the collaborative approach of the initiative and urged village leaders and civil society groups to actively participate. He stressed the need for maintaining updated records and assured continued support from the district administration.
Explaining the vision behind the initiative, SP Kanchan Kumar Kandpal highlighted the increasing migration of youth from Mon district and the associated risks, including exploitation and abuse, often unreported due to lack of a tracking system. He noted that the new programme aims to establish a proactive safety net through close coordination with village councils, church leaders, and community organisations.
The system will maintain a secure and regularly updated database of migrants, detailing their destination, occupation, and facilitators. This data will be accessible only to authorized personnel and used to ensure timely support and intervention when needed.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by SDPO, Mon, Bendangwati Ao and welcome address was delivered by SDPO Tizit, H. Pongloi. The programme concluded with a benediction by assistant commandant, village guard, John.
