Major landslides triggered by a sudden downpour Friday night completely cut off National Highway 29 between Dimapur and Kohima between police check gate, Chumukedima and Jharnapani at around 4 a.m. Saturday.
More than 20 landslides occurred between Chumukedima and Jharnapani the worst affected being at police check gate and Jharnapani.
One house was also washed away a two-wheeler and a Maruti car were buried under mud though no casualty was reported till the time of filing the report.
Hundreds of vehicles including taxis, trucks carrying essentials and passengers buses were stranded along the highway.
Police sealed off the highway and diverted vehicles heading for Kohima return back. EAC Seithekima Alongdimen Jamir said though work was in progress to clear the roads; it could take some more days.
Dobashis and police personnel would also render assistance from Chumukedima Town Council and villagers of Chumukedima, he said.
Some light vehicles bound for Dimapur had to take the route through Jalukie-Khopanalla road.
Taxi fare has also shot up to Rs.600 per passenger, it was reported.
Aspiring candidates from Dimapur for the post of LDA cum Computer Assistant exam under social welfare department held at different colleges in Kohima on August 13 missed their exam due to heavy landslide in various pockets between Patkai Bridge Chumukedima and Kohima at NH-29.
One aspiring candidate, K. Koza from Dimapur, said in order to reach the exam hall on time; most of the candidates started from Dimapur between 5 a.m. to 5.30 a.m. but was stuck in the “middle of nowhere”.
Stating this helpless situation has put them at an embarrassing situation, regret and tension, the candidates further appealed to the department in-charge to grant them another chance to face the exam in making their dreams come true.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur N. Hushili Sema who visited the affected areas has arranged five more JCBs from DMC and CTC to clear the highway at the earliest.
Commissioner and secretary PWD (R&B) Temjen Toy and BRO personnel would be visiting the landslides affected areas on Sunday.
Power supply to Peren, Medziphema cut off
Due to massive landsides between Chumukedima and Jharnapani, power supply to Peren and Medziphema has been affected. Executive engineer Chumukedima, Kezo informed that some of the electric poles were damaged thereby affecting supply.
Efforts were on to restore power supply soon after landslides were cleared, he said.
PHED water supply pipeline damaged
Landslides along the banks of Chathe River, near Patkai bridge and Patkai check post damaged the Public Health Engineering department (PHED) main water supply to Dimapur and Chumukedima.
SDO (PHED) Chumukedima, Kuhato. K. Yepthomi said the damaged pipeline restored on Friday was again damaged on Saturday.
He said the supply line was completely damaged and would take time to restore it.
Further, Yepthomi said that the damaged has affected 921 consumers of Dimapur and Chumukedima and about 44 meters of pipeline have been damaged at eight areas along the river bank.
