Voicing concern over oil spill hazard in Champang oil field, the Indigenous Women Forum of North East India (IWFNEI) Tuesday extended its solidarity with the affected people of the area, particularly Tssori and Champang villagers, who it said have not only suffered health hazards but also could not cultivate in areas affected by oil spillage.
IWFNEI convenor Khesheli Chishi and co-convenor Seema Ranghongpi, in a joint press release, said oil spillage in Champang oil field has been lying unattended and ignored for almost two decades by various responsible government agencies and companies. The forum said the act has left the affected people and their surrounding environment in despair with no sight of respite till recent news reports and latest filing of a PIL, which it said has been long overdue.
They said health experts have highlighted the adverse impact of the toxic waste produced in the oil spill as “hazardous to the health of human kinds, notwithstanding all living things including floras and faunas.”
Pointing out that impact on climate change by the burning of fossil fuels has been the bane of the modern society; the forum said every citizen, not only environmentalists, should understand the gravity of such impacts.
Meanwhile, it appealed to all indigenous peoples and communities of north east to extend support to the democratic and legal process of securing the rights of the oil spill affected communities.
