As part of its academic and extracurricular activities, educational institutions across the state organised various programmes and activities.
ZGC: Department of Economics at Zunheboto Government College, in partnership with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), hosted a one-day seminar on “Emerging Trends in Nagaland Economy,” on November 1.
The event, was attended by 18 faculty members and 53 students. Tonoli S. Awomi, Assistant Professor in Economics, chaired the seminar, emphasizing the need for dialogue on the state’s economic trajectory.
Delivering keynote address, Dr. T. Zarenthung Ezung, Professor of Economics at Nagaland University, presented a detailed analysis of the state’s economy, highlighting a revenue surge from Rs. 339.95 crore in 2012 to Rs. 16,587.3 crore in 2024.
However, he cautioned that Nagaland’s heavy reliance on central government support poses a risk to long-term economic stability. Dr. Ezung pointed out several core challenges, including poor infrastructure, underdeveloped agriculture focused on subsistence rather than commercial viability, and a lack of industrial growth. He advocated for sustainable initiatives, such as coal and limestone utilization, alongside tourism diversification.
Dr. Ezung also addressed corruption and called for a cultural shift to promote political unity and reduce tolerance for unethical practices.
The seminar featured various speakers offering unique perspectives: Esther Angami (YouthNet) discussed the economic struggles of daily wage workers and highlighted the lack of entrepreneurial drive among youth. Lanchung Panmei (SB3 Coating Nagaland) shared his business journey, stressing the importance of digital marketing and customer relations.
He encouraged budding entrepreneurs to pursue financial support, including MUDRA loans, Kileto I Chishi (Assistant Professor, Zunheboto Government College) addressed youth unemployment, now at 27% as of September 2023.
He emphasized skill-building in trades like plumbing, electrical work, and tailoring to enhance local income generation, Elito G. Kibami (Deputy Manager, SBI Zunheboto) highlighted challenges young entrepreneurs face in securing loans and stressed the importance of financial literacy.
She recommended investment in agriculture and allied sectors as alternatives to traditional retail. Dr. Bolivi S. Kiba, Head of the Economics Department, delivered the concluding remark. The seminar highlighted pathways toward economic self-reliance, providing participants with actionable insights to address pressing economic issues and inspire initiatives that support sustainable growth in Nagaland.
FAC: Fazl Ali College (FAC) held its bi-monthly inter-departmental seminar at FAC Conference Hall, on November 2, with Asst. Professor, Nüksüngmenla Jamir, as the paper presenter.
A press release by FAC informed that Jamir dwelled on the topic “Beyond Excess – Reinterpreting Marie Antoinette’s Wardrobe”. The release informed that concluding remarks were delivered by Member of Seminar Committee, FAC, Dr. Aotemshi.
ICFAI: Department of English, ICFAI University Nagaland, on November 1 organised a program titled “A Journey through Words: The Inked Odyssey”.
A press release by the university informed that guests for the event were Dr. Inakali Chishi, Linthoi and Tokaholi, all alumnis of the department, who continue to inspire younger generation in the fields of art and literature.
Dr. Inakali motivated students by sharing about her journey as a writer and highlighted importance of indigenous writings and voices, while Tokaholi encouraged students to make best use of their time and advised aspiring writers to be avid readers as well, and Linthoi presented self-written songs.
Holy Child School: A group of around 80 students from Holy Child School, Dimapur, accompanied by six teachers, on November 1, embarked on an educational field trip to School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (SAS NU), Medziphema Campus.
A press release by the school informed that during the visit, students explored various project units and departments, including Entomology Insect Museum, Library, Education Museum, All India Coordinated Research Project on Pig, STINER-TFC, and Plant Pathology Disease Museum. Faculty members, scholars, and project in-charges provided detailed briefings about different departments and project units. The field trip ended with a short speech by the student representative and Prof. Akali Sema, Pro Vice Chancellor, SAS,NU.
NPC: Norman Putsure College (NPC) celebrated its annual campus fest, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty, and guests from neighboring institutions on October 30.
The event kicked off with a formal session, welcoming participants from various local schools and colleges, including St. Joseph Hr. Sec. School, Hebron Hr. Sec. School, North Town Higher Secondary School, Patkai Christian College, Tetso College, and ICFAI University Nagaland.
Aspire Academy provided insights into Civil Services and held a mock interview for aspiring candidates, while Seyie Design, an interior design firm from Los Angeles, led a workshop on Interior Design. Founder of Seyie Design and Co-Chairman of the college, Seyie Putsure highlighted on the event and interacted with students.
