Nagaland was one amongst the states that received a prestigious Clean Village award – Nirmal Gram Puraskar – at an award ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi Wednesday graced by President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
NGP is awarded to those “open defecation free” Nirmal Gram panchayats, blocks, and districts, which have achieved 100 per cent sanitation.
In a statement, the WSSO director PHED Kevisekho Kruse said altogether seven delegates from Nagaland, comprising of three selected representatives of the 17 award wining villages of 2011 and four PHED officers, attended the function.
Chuchuyimpang village chairman Temsumoa, the selected PRI representative from Nagaland, received the award on behalf of the Nagaland from President of India.
A “Nirmal Gram” is an “open defecation free” village, where all houses, schools and anganwadis having sanitary toilets and the community is aware of the importance of personal hygiene, community hygiene and clean environment.
It may be mentioned that so far a total of 90 villages have qualified and awarded with Nirmal Gram Puraskar, including the awards received this time.
