National Service Scheme of Nagaland on Wednesday observed its annual day at Kohima Science College, marking the 40th year of the organization. The programme was organized by the Department of Youth resources and Sports, and graced by Parliamentary Secretary, Youth Resources and Sports, Naiba Konyak, as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Naiba Konyak said that NSS activities develop right attitude in students in creating responsible citizens of the society. He urged heads of institutions to ensure that NSS cells were given due importance. To improve the quality and magnitude of NSS programmes, Naiba said that Programme Officers play a big role. He urged them to undergo basic foundation courses and refresher courses for smooth functioning of NSS in their institutions. Further, Naiba stated that accounts of NSS funds be maintained separately.
Encouraging the students to build a good character, the chief guest stated that the youth of Nagaland needed to invest their energy in promoting cultural harmony. He added that the greatness of a nation depended on the moral character and true patriotism of its citizens.
Lauding the NSS on its service towards the betterment of the society, Naiba encouraged the volunteers to work hard, which he said would ultimately lead to success. He added “there is no substitute to work, since work alone can solve problems and produce results.”
State Liaison Officer, NSS, Kenneth Punyü, delivered the keynote address, while songs were presented by NSS volunteers. Director of Youth Resources and Sports, Beiu Angami, chaired the programme.
Formed on September 24, 1969, NSS is a student youth organization under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of India. It has a volunteer of about 32 lakhs today. The organization now has its cells in 46 institutions in the state.
