With the objective to strengthen the hands of district malaria officers, programme officers and to share knowledge on malaria and its control, director of National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) government of India Dr. GPS Dhillon held discussion with district malaria officers of 11 districts of Nagaland here at Tourist Lodge, Thursday.
Taking into account some of the lapses in the malaria control programme including lack of laboratory technician, conveyance problem especially in remote areas like Tuensang and Mon district, Dr. Dhillon said he would find solution and would see that even the materials used for diagnosing malaria would be changed to get better results.
With Nagaland and other states in the North East to be given priority by NVBDCP, Dr. Dhillon called upon all district malaria officers to meet once a month to discuss various steps to control malaria.
Owing to technical defects in collecting malaria statistic in the state, malaria officers were asked to collect positive slides for the month of April and May and sent it to RD office Manipur for cross checking by June 15. He urged DMOs to start feeding information about malaria control to the people in rural areas. NVBDCP Delhi joint director V.K Raina expressed hope that if DMOs were able to control malaria in North East it would be a victory for all. Besides stressing on re-orienting lab technician, he also said posts for financial consultant and IEC consultant would be created in the state to assist state programme officer. DMOs were urged to make well use of the funds provided by NVBDCP. Earlier, welcoming the gathering, joint director DHS, NVBDCP Nagaland Dr. Neiketou Angami highlighting the malaria scenario said state was successful in controlling malaria as there were nil cases of death rate in the year 2006-09. However, with the detection of fresh case of malaria DMOs were faced confusion whether programme for controlling malaria was ascending or descending. In spite of the lapses, Dr. Angami said suggestions and directions from Dr. Dhillon to control malaria was highly appreciated.
NVBDCP is the central nodal agency for prevention and control of vector borne diseases i.e. Malaria, Dengue, Lymphatic Filariasis, Kala-azar, Japanese Encephalitis and Chikungunya in India. It is one of the Technical Departments of Directorate General of Health Services, Government of India.
