District health society Mon, along with the rest of the country celebrated World Population Day on the theme, ‘Small Family: Overall Development’ Monday at DC Conference Hall, Mon. Commemorating the day, population stabilization fortnight was also launched.Chief guest of the program, additional deputy commissioner, Mon, Sarah Ritse underscored the importance of population in the context of population explosion afflicting the world today, especially in third world countries. In the Naga context the chief guest cited the example of traditional mentality of prestige and pride attached to families with many children. She called upon the people to do away with outdated mentality and focus on quality of families rather than quantity. The chief guest appealed to the Dobashis, NGOs, student leaders and sister department officers present at the programme to strongly advocate family planning in villages. Speaking on the theme, CDPO Wakching Wango Langsym expounded on the need for imparting cognitive development of every child. He opined that such a feat was possible only when parents were able to spare their time and personal attention to their children which was difficult for parents with many children. He called on the people to think hard and plan their families keeping in mind the fact that the smaller the family, the more time and attention could be showered on each child for their overall development. The program was chaired by medical superintendent, Dr. Hoito and welcome address proposed by Moie Bonny, district programme manager, Mon. The population stabilization fortnight in Mon would continue from July 11 to July 24 at District Hospital Mon. During this time, family planning services, both temporary and permanent methods, including counseling would be made available to the public.TUENSANG: Tuensang district observed ‘World Population Day’ at CMO conference hall under the theme “Small Family: Overall Development” on July 11.Speaking on the occasion, district education officer (DEO) Tuensang Tohoshe Sumi highlighted the gathering on imminent threats of growing population in the country and world at large. Stressing on the importance of having a planned family, DEO stated controlling population explosion was to avoid economic, social and even environmental crisis.He also advised the medical department to take steps on creating awareness among the people, schools and colleges students so they can be responsible parents in the future.Further, medical officer (MO) Angangba PHC, Dr. Philip spoke on the significance of observing ‘World Population Day’ and factors leading to population growth as well as creating awareness among the people for population stabilization.The programme was attended by officials from the medical department and chaired by deputy CMO Tuensang Dr. Thanghoi Lam. Meanwhile, in line with the ‘World Population Day’, the medical department would be observing ‘Population Fortnight’ from July 11 to July 24. District hospital Tuensang would be conducting free male and female sterilization camps and Mother and Child Health (MCH) check-up. All have been requested to avail the services.
