The Gauhati High Court which heard the writ petition of the Naga Mothers’ Association in connection with 33% reservation for women in the civic bodies Friday fixed the next hearing for July 25 next.
During today’s hearing of the Writ petition No. 147/2011(K), the advocate representing the state government reportedly sought more time till September when the state assembly session is due for and when necessary amendment of the Act will be table in the floor of the house for passing.
However, the lawyers representing the petitioner (NMA) argued that sufficient time has been already given to the state government for which the judge had granted another ten days to the respondent.
It may be mentioned that the Naga Mothers’ Association had filed a writ petition in the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench last month following the state government failure to implement the 33% reservation Act which was unanimously passed in the State Legislative Assembly earlier. The Writ petition was admitted on June 24 last in the single bench judge, Justice Sharma.
The NLA had passed the 33% reservation for women in policy making of the civic bodies but it could not be implemented so far due to stiff opposition from certain section of the society and in particular from different tribal Hohos who felt that it would contaminate the Naga tribal culture and practice where men dominate in decision making in the society.
