Two cases of Japanese Encephalitis(JE) were detected in the Dimapur District Hospital according to the department of Health & Family Welfare (H & FW)Monday.A press note issued by Director H & FW Dr R. Imtimeren Jamir disclosed that two out of five samples collected from Dimapur, for analysis at Dibrugarh Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) proved positive for JE.
The director however stated that the two patients- one from Siethekie Basa village and the other from Walford Colony- have fully recovered from infection and were progressing well.
He also informed that there was no reported case of mortality due to J.E. in the state so far.
The press note informed that since JE was a viral disease,with no specific treatment.As preventive measures, the department advised the public to adopt personal protection measures like sleeping under mosquito net, avoid stagnation of water in the surroundings to reduce mosquito breeding, construct pig sties away from residential areas etc.
Common symptoms of JE were – fever, headache, disorientation, tremors, paralysis and loss of co-ordination. It further notified that any person having the mentioned symptoms should immediately report to the nearest hospital/ Health Centre.
Department has also said district programme officer for National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP), assistant director UMS along with entomological team have taken all necessary preventive measures in those areas.
The NVBDCP carries out control and preventive measures annually before the time of year when transmission of vector borne diseases occurs.
