A two-day training programme on ‘scientific management of piggery’ was conducted at KVK Dimapur on July 25 and 26.
The programme started with welcome address by Dr. Ebibeni Ngullie (SMS, Animal Sc.) and a brief introduction about the programme by Dr. B. B. Sarkar, Sr. Consultant, ICRTA, IGNOU, Agartala (Regional Centre), Tripura.
Pig rearing in Nagaland is primarily a small-scale unrecognized rural activity and is an integral part of diversified agriculture.
In Nagaland, contribution of pork to the total meat consumption is reasonably high and although every household rear at least one or two piglets in backyard, the region is still not self sufficient in pork meat.
The pork meat deficit is further aggravated by inadequate availability of piglets, breeding facilities for sow, quality feeds at affordable cost, veterinary services and lack of knowledge about improved pig rearing practices.
Keeping in mind the constraints, 40 women participants from Kukidolong, Medziphema, Seithekema “A”, Molvom and Pherima village were trained to impart various scientific managemental practices for increasing pig production in Nagaland.
During the training programme, various topics including scope on scientific management of piggery, feeding management, housing management, disease management, breeding management, management of infertility in pigs along with importance of record keeping and economics in pig production enterprise were imparted to the women farmers.

KVK Dimapur, Dr. Rajib Das (Technical Assistant), Dr. Vihielie Sanchu, JRF, Poultry Seed Project, Dr. Lily Ngullie, R.A. Mega Seed Project on Pig and Dr. Sunayana Baruah, SRF, NICRA project of ICAR (RC), Nagaland Centre. The programme ended with a valedictory session where Dr. B.C. Deka, Joint Director, ICAR (RC), Nagaland Centre addressed the participants to take up pig farming as an entrepreneur.
The programme was organised by IGNOU, ICRTA, Agartala (Regional Centre), Tripura in collaboration with KVK Dimapur, ICAR-RC for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre.
