The Eastern Naga People’s Organization (ENPO) has welcomed the state cabinet’s recommendation to the Centre for creation of an Autonomous Council encompassing of four districts- Tuensang, Mon, Longleng and Kiphire- against the backdrop of its demand for a separate statehood. Speaking to Nagaland Post, ENPO president Mangko Phom said the organization was happy with the cabinet decision, adding that the state government has recognized the grievances of the people of Eastern Nagaland before any “situation” was created. Phom also informed that two consecutive meetings would be held at Mon and Tuensang on July 28 and 29 to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) central office bearers held a meeting on Wednesday at its office headquarters Kohima and unanimously resolved to support and uphold the landmark decision of the state cabinet to recommend creation of autonomous council covering four districts. A joint press release issued by the resolution committee -NPF secretary general, K.G. Kenye, vice president Zaku Tsuku, vice president T.L. Merry, vice president Er. T.L. Semdok and associate press secretary Shilumar- stated that in view of certain historical background and considering that the area was comparatively less developed, creation of an autonomous council for the four districts would grant them authority to administer the area which they opined was the “best possible arrangement” for all round development. While reiterating the policy of the NPF “to stand any force to further divide the Nagas,” the committee said the party had determined that granting autonomy to the four districts was an upfront step in the right direction.
