Against the backdrop of FIRs lodged by 358 duped customers of “Sri Komal Traders”, the east police station authority, in presence of the magistrate, DBs of DC office, owner of the building, GB of East Block Colony seized ‘items’ from the shop Wednesday.
According to OC east PS Atu Zumvü, the FIRs were enclosed with “order form cash receipt” which was issued to the customers by “Sri Komal Traders” proprietor C. Thangraj. The customers were duped of rupees sixteen lakh five thousand two hundred and nineteen.
Talking about the loopholes in issuing of trade license, the OC said when any non-local applied for trade license to the licensing authority i.e. DMC and taxes department, the departments should always officially write to local police department for verification with regard to their character and address so as to ascertain whether they have any past crime record.
Police said only after the ‘clearance’ certificate issued by their counter partner i.e. police station from where the responsible person hails, the local police can issue police verified report to the licensing authority.
“If these formalities were observed by the license authority while issuing the trade license the police could have easily nabbed Thangraj,” said Zumvü.
He was of the opinion that procedure should be made mandatory so that police could easily nab anyone who dupes the public in future.
Further, the OC lamented the procedure that was being followed presently, and said so far he has not come across any department seeking police verification report.
Later, the police disclosed that shop was formally inaugurated on July 6 and that the proprietor fled July 31. The OC also said that seized items (detail on page 7) would be forwarded to the court.
Meanwhile, while inquired to DMC by this reporter, they disclosed that the trade license was issued to C. Thangraj by Mahesh Agarwal and Bliss Zeliang, both trade license in-charges, on the basis of “PAN card” which was provided on the time of applying for the trade license.
