One arrested for rape, murder

In a major break through, Dimapur police on Thursday arrested a person involved in the alleged rape and murder of a 21-year old girl, Avino,  in Kirha village, at Airpor Junction  Dimapur on July 21.
The   SIT team headed by SDPO Dimapur, Shouka Kakheto,OC Diphupar ASI Yawao Konyak, the IO of the case and ASI Inaka Kinimi got the breakthrough following recovery of the victim’s mobile handset.  Police were able to track down the accused, identified as Bekuto aka Beto Zhimomi (21) son of Khehoto Zhimomi on August 18  and resident of  3 ½ mile, Dimapur.

 PRO and Addl SP Dimapur said contrary to earlier suspicions, the victim had not been gang-raped. It was stated that  both Beto and the victim(Avino) were neighbors and on the night of July 21 Beto who was in an inebriated state, visited Avino and both spent more than two hours.
According to police, the cause of the crime was jealously as Beto suspected  Avino of having an affair with another boy. In a fit  of anger, Beto hit Avino on the head with a wooden plank and fled from the scene along with cash and the mobile handset found in the victim’s room. 

Preliminarily investigations  did not yield any clue despite police recording statements of various suspects, family members, friends and neighbors. The break came when the handset was traced to a non local mechanic based on EMEI mobile number and  call detail records and location determination. 
 On interrogation, the mechanic confessed that he bought the handset from one person for Rs.300.The other person also confessed he bought the mobile from the accused in a booze joint.
 
Finally, police tracked down Beto after the “SIM number recorded” used in the victim’s handset immediately after the crime, was found in his possession.
Initially Beto tried to misguide police but finally broke down when the SIM number recorded and used immediately after the crime was found in his possession.
Meanwhile, Dimapur police has thanked various organization and responsible citizens for their co-operation and patience during the course of investigation.
