NRHM for reducing maternal deaths

A one-day advocacy and sensitization with representatives of Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho (AMK) Kohima district (erstwhile Angami Women Organisation) was held on October 1 at Angami Public Organisation Conference Hall, Kohima town.

The programme was organized by State Health Society, NRHM, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland with the aim to create awareness about various programmes implemented under NRHM and to stress on the importance of maternal health, child health & family planning.

Speaking at the programme, Salhoutounuo Kruse, President of Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho thanked the department for organizing the programme and stated that representatives from Southern Angami, Northern Angami, Western Angami and Chakhro women organizations were present to know more about the activities of the department through the advocacy.

Giving the welcome address, Menukhol John, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & FW stated that health was the collective responsibility of both the community and the department and urged the participants to contribute in their respective areas in improving the health status of the people.

Menukhol highlighted some success stories being undertaken through Public Private Partnership mode by the Department, such as Langpong health centre in Tuensang and Mon District Hospital. Dr. Joel Koza, Dy. Director, RCH who spoke on the importance of maternal health, child health & family planning said, out of 100 pregnancies, 15 would require skilled assistance while 5 pregnancies would need surgery.

Listing the various causes of maternal deaths such as hemorrhage, Anemia, Puerperal sepsis, Obstructive disease etc., he said factors such as low female literacy, lack of awareness, poor nutritional status, early age, low status of women, poverty, large family, decreased spacing etc contribute to maternal deaths.

Stating that skilled birth attendance at delivery, emergency obstetric care (EmOC), Referral system, safe abortion care can save maternal lives, he emphasized on community support to a pregnant mother and timely access to health care.

Giving an overview of NRHM, Puni Kokho, State facilitator, NRHM said that National Rural Health Mission was launched to provide better health care services to the doorsteps of the people.

He informed the participants about various programmes implemented under NRHM such as streamlining and management of hospitals/health centres, the ASHA programme, Village Health & Nutrition Days and providing additional manpower such as doctors, nurses and manpower for management support at state, district and block levels.

During discussion hour led by Dr. Sweyievisa John, Jt. Director (RCH), doubts put forward by the participants were clarified regarding Reproductive Child Health and NRHM programmes.

Altogether, 28 participants from Angamimiapfü Mechü Krotho attended the programme, while the department representatives included Dr. Toshevi Sema, Mission Director (NRHM) and other officials. Earlier the programme was chaired by Dr. L. Kuotsu, Jt. Director (RCH) while the vote of thanks was delivered by Metevinuo Sakhrie, state IEC Consultant (NRHM).
