52 students receive meritorious awards
State Governor, Dr. Ashwani Kumar Saturday said he was aghast to learn the high rate of unemployment in the state and also note that maximum number of the unemployed comprised of graduates and under graduates.
The governor said this while addressing the meritorious award ceremony Saturday for toppers of class 12 and degree examinations held at Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan Kohima.
During his speech, Dr. Ashwani Kumar asked “what is the point of schools and colleges churning out graduates and undergraduates” if they could not find employment.
He said it was high time for the students, parents, teachers and educationists to come together and establish placement cells in each institution so that students who did not want to study beyond 10+2 could find gainful employment.
The governor opined that there was a need to re-design the contents of syllabus and system of imparting knowledge, skills and degrees which were more relevant and useful to individuals and society.
If degrees, diplomas and certificates were not making one earn a reasonable livelihood and if society did not benefit from the learning system, the certificates awarded to the students would become meaningless pieces of paper said the governor.
Stating that Nagaland had talents in performing arts, language and soft skills, the governor said these could be the strong points for the youth of the state.
Parliamentary secretary higher education and SCERT Deo Nukhu in his brief address congratulated the awardees and urged them to keep their efforts constant.
52 toppers from all streams from schools and colleges were given the meritorious awards for the first time by the department of higher education Nagaland.
Minister of school education CM Chang, government officials, NSF, ANCSU, students from various schools and parents attended the award ceremony.
