Students have greater responsibility towards society: Er. Levi Rengma

Four top toppers of the 2013 Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) and High School Leaving Certificate (HSCL) exam of Arts, Science and Commerce stream under NBSE were felicitated Saturday with cash prizes and momento by the Manik Bhattacharjee Foundation at Pranab Jubilee auditorium, Dimapur.
Recipient of the awardees were Md Helal Uddin Shah from MGM School Dimapur who secured 1st rank in HSLC, Yimkum I Ozukum of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, 1st in HSSLC Science stream, Dziesetuonuo Linyu from Don Bosco HS School, Kohima, 1st rank in Arts stream and Kirti Agarwal, SD Jain HS School Dimapur, 1st rank in commerce stream.
NLA Deputy Speaker Er Levi Rengma who was the chief guest in his speech said students in this 21st century had greater responsibility towards the society with serious issues of cultural diversity and global sustainability becoming more salient in every society.
He said students could play a significant role in helping out the less fortunate members of the society by fighting against racial discrimination, social equality and economic disparity and also be a force to reckon with so that political parties, national leaders and the administrative set up ‘bend their knees’ before their might.
Guest of honor- Editor, Eastern Mirror Bano Haralu who knew late Manik Battacharchee in person remembered him as an altruistic person who always put the concern of other before himself.
Despite a number of pioneering credits and achievements, creating a sense of unity among the different communities, and merging the psyche of the people around him in togetherness was perhaps his greatest contribution to the society, Bano opined.
Despite the fact of studying in a politically charged state of Nagaland, Bano urged the students to continue remain true to their first duty, which was to acquire knowledge.
HSLC topper Helal Uddin Shah speaking on behalf of the toppers thanked the Manik Battacharchee foundation for the award and felicitation.
An educationist and noted social worker, Late Manik Battacharjee, popularly known as ‘manikda’ was the founder of Pranab Vidyapith Higher Secondary School, Pranabananda Womens’ College and chief organizer of Bharat Sevashram Sangh. He passed away in 2008 aged 74 in Dimapur.
Manik Battacharjee Awards for toppers was formed in honor of his name and works. The award consists of Rs 10,000 cash and momento for HSSLC toppers and Rs 5000 cash and momento for HSLC toppers.
