Bringing a relief for the people of Mon district, Sonari Truck Owners’ Association (STOA), Sivasagar Friday lifted its economic blockade in response to Mon district administration’s assurance of fool-proof security for truckers across Assam-Nagaland border.
Sonari Truck Owners’ Association had imposed indefinite economic blockade on Nagaland since September 3, 2013 in protest against tax collected by Naga underground groups from goods-laden trucks.
Mon district had been facing a crisis of essential commodities for the past three days as a result of the STOA action.
Talking to Nagaland Post over phone, Konyak Union (KU) joint secretary Shasa said STOA decided to withdraw its economic blockade after a meeting with Mon district administration at Tizit, Mon Friday.
According to Shasa, ADC and SP Mon; STOA representatives and KU officials attended the meeting held at the ADC’s conference hall, Tizit.
“At the meeting, the district administration assured STOA of fool-proof security for the trucks in sensitive areas along the inter-state border. Responding to the assurance, STOA agreed to lift the economic blockade,” said Shasa.
He said Nagaland police personnel including IRBn have already deployed been in sensitive areas. “We have requested the underground groups not to impose tax on the trucks coming to Nagaland via Assam.
Moreover, there are some miscreants who pose as underground activists to collect tax from trucks. The underground groups have assured us of their cooperation, considering the difficulties faced by the people of Mon district,” said the KU leader.
