
Pre-Teachers Day cum legal awareness programme was celebrated by Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) with teachers and students of Government Middle School, Midland, Kohima on September 2 at the school premises.
In the programme, chief judicial magistrate and secretary, KDLSA, Mezivolu T. Therieh highlighted the importance of legal services and various activities carried out by the legal services authority.
She also said the main objective of the programme was to sensitize about the legal rights that has been provided by the Constitution of India as it is the basic Fundamental Rights of every citizen of India.
Panel lawyer Apila Sangtam spoke on the topic “child rights” and highlighted some of the provisions available to promote child rights like Right to Survival, Right to Development, Juvenile Justice Act, POSCO Act and Child Labour Act.
Panel lawyer Hisinlo Himb, spoke on the topic “right to education” and stated that the right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act was passed by the Indian Parliament on August 4, 2009.
He said the Act provides that a child above 6 years of age who has not been admitted in any school or though admitted, could not complete his elementary education, was entitled to be admitted to an avail free education till completion of elementary education even after 14 years of age.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by retainer lawyer, Kekhriengulie Theunuo, and in his opening remarks he mentioned about the significance of celebrating Teachers Day and the importance of how it was started.
Welcome address was given by teacher-in-charge and the programme ended up with quiz and a documentary show on child rights to education.
